Happy New Year, and welcome back! Our topic in Spring Term is the Caribbean, which is a perfect antidote to the cold, dreary weather we are having. We will be looking at the climate, and conducting experiments and taking measurements of the weather in Cambridge for comparison. We will also be looking into what makes the Caribbean islands such hot-spots for tourism, and seeing how this compares to the attractions in England. The children will get to practise their debating and persuasive writing, producing a pamphlet to convince people to visit either the Caribbean or Cambridge itself.


In science we are studying evolution and inheritance, and the children will become true investigators as they examine the evidence for and against the theories of evolution and natural selection.



Year 5 children should still be writing in their Reading Records when they read, and we are looking for comments about how the author has achieved certain effects, and the words and devices that make the writing interesting. Children are also encouraged to comment on how they think the book could be improved – not every book is enjoyable for every child! The children will take home a reading book and their reading record every evening, and are expected to read at home for at least 20 minutes every day. The book and reading record must come back to school with them every day, so they can continue during the school day.


Homework activities and spelling sheets are still given out on Monday to be handed in on the Thursday, unless otherwise specified, and spelling tests will happen on a Thursday during class. The children have weekly times tables tests, and will move onto the next times table when they have got 95% or higher in their test. The children’s times tables progress is charted on a display in the classroom, so the children know which times table they should be practising each week. As well as these specific tasks, it will greatly aid your child's progress if time each week is given to develop their mathematics through the use of The children have all been given their usernames and passwords, and I keep a spare copy in case they get lost!


This term the children have swimming on a Thursday morning, accompanied by Mrs. Day, and PE with premier sport on a Friday morning, so please make sure that your child has the appropriate PE and swimming kit on these days. Long hair should be tied back and piercings should be removed.

Each week pupils will be supported in their learning with a range of one to one and small group activities provided by the teaching assistants working in the class; Mrs P and Miss Flowers.
