Main Themes of class work for week beginning: 3rd July 2017
Practising lines and gathering play costume
Welcome back; I hope you all had a lovely Easter holiday. Our topic in Summer Term is the Victorians, and the children will be answering two key questions: ‘Would we have wanted to be children in the Victorian period?’ and ‘What did the Victorians do for us?’ We will be looking at a variety of information sources, including artefacts, first-hand accounts and secondary sources, and evaluating the potential bias of certain sources. There may even be the opportunity for some dressing up!
In science we are studying electricity and circuits this half term. In the second half term we will be looking at humans, including puberty and reproduction, as part of both science and PSHE. A letter with more information on this topic will be given out closer to the time.
Reading and Homework
Year 5 children should still be writing in their Reading Records when they read, and homework activities and spelling sheets are still given out on Monday to be handed in on the Thursday, unless otherwise specified. Spelling tests will happen on a Thursday during class. The children have weekly times tables tests, and will move onto the next times table when they have got 95% or higher in their test. The children’s times tables progress is charted on a display in the classroom, so the children know which times table they should be practising each week. As well as these specific tasks, it will greatly aid your child's progress if time each week is given to develop their mathematics through the use of uk.mathletics.com. The children have all been given their usernames and passwords, and I keep a spare copy in case they get lost!
This term the children have gymnastics on a Thursday morning with Mrs. Day, and PE with Premier Sport on a Friday morning, so please make sure that your child has the appropriate PE kit on these days. Long hair should be tied back and piercings should be removed.
Mr Harris, Miss Flowers and I are really looking forward to visiting Kingswood with class 5. It will be enormous fun, and of course provide a wonderful opportunity for the children to get to know their teacher for next year. We might even be able to persuade Mr Harris to try the Leap of Faith! We will have more information about the activities and sleeping arrangements any day now, so the children will have enough information to get well and truly excited!
Each week pupils will be supported in their learning with a range of one to one and small group activities provided by the teaching assistants working in the class; Mrs P and Miss Flowers.
Thank you to all parents and carers who are supporting the children with their learning this year. If you ever wish to discuss anything with me please do come to talk with me briefly at the end of the school day or send in a note so that I can arrange with you for a suitable time for a longer meeting.
